Pamukkale means cotton castle, and the white travertine terraces really do look like a hillside of cotton stacked against the sky. Above them sits Hierapolis, an ancient Roman spa town with a theatre, necropolis and a thermal pool you can still swim in. Go in late afternoon to catch the terraces glowing at sunset and beat the tour-bus crowds.
